Advanced Study: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

As part of the degree requirements, students complete a research project or theses in an area of interest to them. This enhances their expertise in an area.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or by several other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. The flight of UAVs may operate with various degrees of autonomy: either under remote control by a human operator, or fully or intermittently autonomously, by onboard computers. [1][2]

Thanks to advanced technology, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle networks gets a lot of interest as one of emerging research topics since it can be exploited for various practical applications such as rescue operation, disaster monitoring, delivery of emergent items, etc. Among several issues in UAV networks, a collision avoidance among multiple small-scale UAVs should be considered. Also, a barrier-coverage is considered as an important coverage concept. Therefore, it is essential to consider how to design energy-efficient collision-free barriers by UAVs which is applicable to different types of barrier-coverage such as reinforced barrier-coverage, event-driven barrier-coverage.

It is expected that UAVs will be exploited for numerous applications. But, it may cause several critical issues such as privacy of citizen, efficient handling for collision avoidance among heterogeneous multiple UAVs. Also, it is necessary to minimize delay of mission completion by UAVs and to maximize UAV network lifetime since small-scale UAVs may have limited flight distance.

Expert Faculty

Students who want to specialize in UAV can study independently with faculty who actively research and publish in the field, and who also have significant hands-on knowledge of UAV. Several research topics in this area include: collision-avoidance in barrier coverage, citizen privacy protection from UAV, heterogeneous multiple UAVs.
