M.S. Computer Science & Information Systems Program Overview

Degree Overview

The degree consists of:

  • 36 semester hours
  • Six required core courses providing a mix of theoretical underpinning, technical skills and information technology perspectives
  • Students can choose elective courses to provide opportunity for additional study in a variety of areas
  • Program culminates with a capstone experience that can be an integrative project or a thesis

The MSCSIS degree is part of the Professional Science Master's (PSM) Program. Professional Science Master's are new graduate degrees designed to allow students to pursue advanced training in science or mathematics, while simultaneously developing workplace skills highly valued by employers.

Learning Goals

  1. Graduates will be able to formulate and solve problems using advanced mathematics and numerical methods, and computer information systems-based techniques.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of ethics and professionalism, and understand contemporary issues such as green computing, data security, privacy and compliance with regulations.
  3. Graduates will be able to complete analysis and design of business processes employing the latest information technology techniques, including the unified process model.
  4. Graduates will be able to apply science and business principles to analyze and interpret data, using analytic and computer-based techniques.
  5. Graduates will demonstrate effective communication through written and oral presentations.
  6. Graduates will be exposed to a variety of advanced technology communications tools, such as Web conferencing, wikis, social networking software.

Graduate Assistantships

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available. Students typically work either 20 hours per week (a full-time assistantship) or 10 hours per week (a halftime assistantship). Graduate assistantships currently pay $12,500 and $6,250 per academic year respectively. Assistantship interest should be indicated on the application form.
