What kind of degree is the IMBA?

An IMBA features all the academic requirements and painstaking training of a typical MBA, but with greater focus on global business cultures and practices. This essential combination provides business professionals with a firm foundation in international leadership and acts as a strong propellant to a student’s career prospects.

How does the program work?

At UNCW, our IMBA is offered as a part of the International Business School Alliance (IBSA) Dual Degree Master’s Program and uniquely combines travel, adventure, and culture with a profound academic experience – students earn two master’s degrees in about one calendar year in two different countries! This degree has been uniquely designed to set graduates apart from other job-seekers.

The IBSA Dual Degree Master’s Program is an innovative, fast-paced, international education for motivated and adventurous students. The program is geared towards students with an undergraduate degree in business, finance, or economics. All courses are taught in English.

This one-year, full-time dual master’s degree consists of three main elements. The first term begins with a core set of identical class modules that are taught at all six universities in a host of global settings. For the second term you choose a different partner university, based on your preference of specialization. The third element is completing a thesis project at the end of your two semesters.

Through IBSA, students can choose from six universities in the USA (UNC Wilmington’s Cameron School of Business), Europe and Russia to earn their two master’s degrees:

  • International Finance & Investments (University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA)
  • Human Resource Management (University of Hertfordshire, UK)
  • International Logistics & Supply Chain Management (Hochschule Bremen, City University of Applied Sciences, Germany)
  • International Management of Emerging Economies (RANEPA, Institute of Business Studies Moscow, Russia)
  • International Entrepreneurship (ESSCA School of Management Paris, France)
  • International Marketing (University of Valencia, Spain)

If you wish to obtain one of your master’s degrees from the UNCW Cameron School of Business, you must spend one semester at UNCW and the other semester at one of the IBSA partner schools. You must apply to the university at which you would like to take your core modules in the fall semester, and then that university will submit your application to your chosen specialization university on your behalf.

What can I expect?

At UNCW, students can expect to gain maximum benefits for minimal invested time as they earn two master’s degrees within a one-year period of time.

As the IBSA website explains, “Studying in two different countries and thus encountering one or more new culture gives you an excellent chance to communicate and live in both environments successfully. The master’s degree offers this experience by providing exchanges between the different universities and allowing you to interact with students from other nationalities and cultures.”
