About the Economics and Finance Department

The Economics and Finance Department supports the Bachelor of Science with concentrations in Economics and Finance. Students in liberal arts may also pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Economics as well as a minor in Economics within this department. Studying economics and finance will challenge students to sharpen their critical thinking skills and encourage them to apply classroom concepts to real-world problems. At the graduate level, the economic faculty supports courses in economic environment studies, while the finance faculty supports the International Master of Business Administration.

The department also engages students outside of the classroom. Each December, a select group of students travel to New York City to learn about the role of financial institutions in the macroeconomy. Students have attended presentations at institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Barclays Capital, and Bank of America.

In addition, the department fields a team of students to participate in the Fed Challenge. The Fed Challenge is a competition intended to enhance students' understanding of the Federal Reserve System and how it formulates and implements monetary policy. The competition consists of both the presentation and a question-and-answer period before a panel of judges from the Federal Reserve. The 2012 and 2010 teams won finalist honors in the Charlotte Fed Challenge competition.

Faculty members also encourage student research through directed independent studies and research presentations in public forums. Our students have been the recipients of the Paul E. Hosier Undergraduate Research and Creativity Fellowship and presented their research to a broad UNC Wilmington and community audience at the Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship fair.

The department also boasts two active student clubs, the Student Finance Association (SFA) and the National Association for Business Economics (NABE). Outstanding scholastic accomplishments in economics earn students an invite to the economics honor society, Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE). Prestigious scholarships for finance students are available to candidates enrolling and registering for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examinations.

Many of our majors enter professional schools within a few years of graduation, including MBAs and law degrees. Other students find employment as financial analysts, research economists, and consultants. Several of our recent students are pursuing graduate studies in economics and finance. Students in either major will be well prepared for a wide variety of careers.
