About Accountancy and Business Law
The Department of Accountancy and Business Law provides courses and other academic support for the B.S. degree with an option in accountancy and the Master of Science in Accountancy, both of which prepare students for professional accounting careers. The department also offers courses in business law and the legal environment of business.
The B.S. degree with an option in accountancy provides graduates a foundation for careers in many professional accounting settings, including manufacturing and service businesses, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations. This degree meets the educational requirements to sit for the Uniform CPA examination in North Carolina. Successful exam candidates must also satisfy the requirement of 150 hours of education to become a licensed CPA. Graduates of the Cameron School of Business who complete the option in accountancy are also qualified to take the Certified Management Accountant and other professional licensure examinations.
The Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) satisfies both the educational requirement to sit for the Uniform CPA exam (regardless of undergraduate degree) and the 150-hour education requirement to apply for licensure as a CPA in North Carolina and many other states. More importantly, the MSA Program incorporates advanced coursework in auditing, taxation, financial reporting, information systems and other skills needed to succeed on the Uniform CPA exam and the practice of accounting. Beyond a solid understanding of accounting principles, students improve research, interpersonal, and presentation skills and are fully ready to begin their career. Graduates of the MSA Program are well received by major public accounting firms and industrial employers, enjoying over 95% placement by graduation.
