Cameron Insider: The Quarterly Update for CSB Alumni

In the beginning of September, as I always do, I wrote my letter for the Cameron Insider. At that time, no one could conceive what awaited us later that same month as Hurricane Florence made landfall over Wilmington. This event changed the course of our fall semester in ways never imagined and landed us in the record books!

UNCW's decision-makers spent many hours in the days and weeks that followed the storm trying to piece together how our beautiful campus would recover from downed trees, missing shingles and water damage, and how missed classroom hours would be made up. Administrators came together to brainstorm, to solve these complex issues, and to crank out new semester schedules and a sequence of building repairs in an impossibly short period of time.

While we came up with a pretty good plan, our students have to endure the stress of making up an unprecedented loss of instructional time, including losing their fall break and reading day. However, I'm proud to say that our students rose to the occasion and handled these challenges like true professionals. As I told them in my email message, "Perhaps, one day, you will be called to deal with and lead in challenging situations, and this semester’s experience will aid you in those efforts."

Even as we fought through the trials of this disaster, Cameron received a very exciting announcement from the Congdon family! David '78 and his wife, Helen, have committed to giving the largest outright gift in university history. With it, UNCW will establish the David S. Congdon School of Supply Chain, Business Analytics and Information Systems, supporting these programs within the Cameron School of Business and a renaming of the current CIS Building. In this issue, you will also read about a Cameron student’s travel adventures for National Geographic; a Cameron alumnus who works for Untappd, a social networking site that lets users rate beers and check in at their favorite watering holes; and students from Marketing 343's connection to this year's Cucalorus Connect.

David and Helen Congdon at their gift announcement in December 2018UNCW Receives $10 Million Gift to Establish New School

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has received a $10 million gift commitment from alumnus David Congdon ’78, and his wife, Helen. This represents the largest outright gift commitment in university history; with it, UNCW will establish the "David S. Congdon School of Supply Chain, Business Analytics and Information Systems," supporting these programs within the Cameron School of Business. The Computer Information Systems Building will also be rededicated as David S. Congdon Hall.

"Generous and innovative philanthropic leaders like the Congdons help the university address the most pressing needs of the region, building workforce expertise and benefiting local industries," said Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli. "We are confident that this commitment will serve as a catalyst to inspire other donors who want to transform the lives of students and help us engage faculty, alumni and the community to expand, explore, and address the issues important to our region."

David Congdon graduated from UNCW in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and was named the 2008 Cameron School of Business Alumnus of the Year. He has spent his entire career, which began when he was a teenager and continued after graduation, with Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. The company was founded in Richmond, Va., in 1934 by his grandparents. Its headquarters was relocated to High Point, NC, in the early '60s where the Congdon family has resided since. David’s experience has included dockworker, truck driver, mechanic, industrial engineer and various executive positions leading up to his promotion to the role of President and Chief Operating officer from 1997-2015. He was named CEO in 2008 and currently acts as Executive Chairman of the Board. Congdon has been recognized in the Triad and by Fortune magazine for his business and community leadership, and he serves on a number of community and industry boards.

It is anticipated that the Congdons’ gift will have a substantial impact in facilitating scholarships and professorships; providing research support; creating and maintaining corporate sponsorships; advancing program technology and equipment; and making capital improvements to the Computer Information Systems Building.

"The Congdons’ transformational investment will provide an opportunity to increase access to high-achieving students, recruit and retain world-class faculty, and invest in state-of-the-art technology," said Cameron School of Business Dean Robert Burrus. "This investment will help spark the careers of students who plan to work in industries that are rapidly growing and that pay high starting salaries."

CSB Students Apply Learning via Cucalorus Connect

Four years ago, Cucalorus Connect was developed as an addition to the annual Cucalorus event, which itself is 24 years strong. Cucalorus Connect is a two-day technology, business and innovation/entrepreneurship conference woven into the original film festival, and is partially sponsored by UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This year, the Connect events took place November 8-9 in historic downtown Wilmington, interspersed among the film and stage events.

The Cameron School of Business has maintained a presence at Connect, including the intertwining of events with the annual Entrepreneurship Week, originally run by Stephen Harper who retired in May 2018. This semester, Matthew Magne, part-time instructor in the marketing department, serves on both the Cucalorus Connect Executive Advisory Board and the Cucalorus Communication Board. In addition, Rika Spencer’s “Marketing Intelligence and Communication” class is taking advantage of this successful local event to apply their learning, analyzing social media traffic as well as data from in-person surveys about the event. Dr. Spencer’s students examined what drives social media activity, gaining insight into the customer base for Cucalorus Connect and gathering an understanding of the degree of success on social media using a variety of different metrics.

The speakers at Connect included executives from local, regional and international companies, including nCino, Apiture, Cloudwyze, SAS, GE and Salesforce. UNCW faculty from the business, psychology, computer science, physics and business analytics departments also shared in the interactive dialog. The keynote speaker this year was Susan Ellis, director of brand and corporate social innovation at SAS with special guest, Charlie Fink, futurist and Forbes columnist. Ellis spoke on the importance of emotion in large-scale technology decisions and how essential it is to tell the story of a company’s brand. She shared how speaking in a way that connects technology to people can make a huge impact on the success of a brand.

CSB alumni employees at Untappd in downtown WilmingtonNo Such Thing as “Untappd” Potential

Chandler Hatch '15 didn’t take the traditional route to a sales profession. In fact, he was photographing surfers in Puerto Rico after he graduated from CSB when he applied for the job at Untappd.

Untappd is a fast-growing, venture-backed technology company in Wilmington, NC, that develops social and data-driven consumer and business software products in the beer and wine space. Untappd made Wilmington its home when Next Glass, a wine app, acquired the company in 2016. Untappd is now the biggest beer app in the world with approximately 15,000 business partners around the globe.

The company has been recognized on numerous occasions, including being ranked #150 on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America in 2018 (#1 in North Carolina!), and #98 on Entrepreneur Magazine’s list of the 360 most entrepreneurial companies in 2017. The Untappd leadership team has also been invited to speak at dozens of events about start-ups, growth and sales.

Since Hatch joined the team two and a half years ago, the sales department has grown from six to more than 40 employees. Hatch is now a sales manager and helped design the LDA/SDR sales model that the company currently utilizes, which helped Untappd explode in growth.

"In the morning, the sales team will be talking to people in places like Russia, Norway, and the Netherlands… mid-morning we are with the east coast; we work our way to the west coast, and if we are here late, we’re usually talking to Australia," Hatch said.

The Untappd office downtown screams Millennials with beer taps, a "living wall" and open workspaces with sales scoreboards scribbled on whiteboard walls. They pride themselves on providing jobs to the Wilmington community, as well as supporting local businesses through their lunch reimbursement program and organizing company outings or community service events via their "Culture Captains."

Hatch said he feels the Cameron School prepares students for careers very well, starting with the overall understanding of how a business operates to its emphasis on the importance of sales. He also stressed the importance of the Résumé Assistance Program – now that he has had a hand in hiring new members of the sales team since being at Untappd, he knows just how important a good resume is! About 25 percent of the current Untappd sales team members are Cameron School of Business alumni – something that Hatch takes great pride in.

Axel Tuxen at Citadel Park in Spain59 Days of Adventure

In June 2018, CSB senior Axel Tuxen-Ringkjob embarked on a summer quest traveling the globe. He acquired this opportunity through his persistent efforts to coordinate with National Geographic (read more about how this opportunity came about in June’s digital edition of the Cameron Insider). According to Axel, the 59-day journey was truly a dream come true.

Although his primary goal was to take as many unique photos as possible from an adventurous perspective, the trip encompassed so much more than just photography. Axel made every effort to fully embrace the experience through interactions with locals, tasting native cuisine and visiting sites and attractions typically unknown to tourists. Early in his explorations, a local in Portugal advised Axel to consider using the Tinder app – typically used as a dating app – as an alternative way to connect with other locals who could provide tours and information on the best activities in the area.

In addition to ash-boarding down a volcano in Italy and visiting all of the sites he planned in advance, it was through the use of Tinder and a rideshare app called Blah Blah Car that he was better able to explore the night life in Budapest, the charming food markets and city streets in Spain and hidden gems like Verdon Gorge in France.

Thanks to careful planning, the trip went smoothly and every location that he expected to visit was thoroughly explored. Axel even took advantage of his time abroad to connect with people he previously met in other travels. In Prague, he reconnected with someone he collaborated with at Botta Shoes while on a consulting trip with other CSB students last year. While in Denmark, he met up with two Australian students he had previously studied with in Fudan, China.

Over the course of his time abroad, Axel took approximately 4,000 photos. Upon his return, he submitted nearly 300 of these images to National Geographic for their review. He does not know yet exactly where these photos will be published or which of the images they will use, but continues to be in touch with individuals from National Geographic about these determinations.

Axel admits to having the “travel bug” more now than ever before. Though he may not be able to commit to regular adventures of this kind, he does plan to incorporate travel into his future work-life balance.
