Application Process


Open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors and class standing as well as faculty and staff.

Applicants who have an innovative idea to address a current or future need/problem are invited to apply for the opportunity to display their proposed solution to a group of judges. There are no restrictions on area of interest (e.g. energy, social, technology), type of organization/initiative you would like to form (e.g. profit, non-profit, community of interest, etc.) or target area (US and/or international).

Applicants need submit a two-page (single-spaced with 12 point font) proposal to Dr. Xaver Neumeyer – coordinator of the Big Idea Competition - no later than 11:59 pm (midnight) on October 25th. Team submissions are encouraged, but not required.

The proposal must have the following sections:

  1. Name(s) and email address(es).
  2. Description of the new (business) idea or innovative product, service or
    business model and why it is innovative.
  3. Description of the opportunity to be seized or the problem that needs to
    be solved.
  4. Description of the people or organizations to be targeted.
  5. Description of how the product, service, or business model will be better
    than already existing solutions.
  6. Description of factors that indicate the concept is feasible (e.g. how the
    applicant(s) plan to proceed.
  7. Description of resources needed (e.g. financial, know-how).

Review Process & Presentation Format

Finalists will be notified by Oct, 30 and present at Congdon Hall on Nov. 11@5:30.


The competition will only take place if there are at least three qualified entrants.
